10 Practical Ways to Trust and Rely on God Daily

Faith in Motion: Trusting God When Life Gets Complicated

Have you ever prayed about a situation and wondered whether you are truly trusting God? Perhaps it is a change you desperately want to see in your spouse, a concern about your children’s choices or future, a career challenge, or troubling developments in your church, community, or even government policies that directly or indirectly affect your everyday life. Whatever the situation, we sometimes find ourselves caught between trusting God and trying to figure everything out on our own.

But how do we know when we are truly relying on God rather than our own understanding? Trusting God is more than praying and hoping for the best. It is reflected in how we respond to challenges, the choices we make, and our willingness to surrender what we cannot control.

King Jehoshaphat faced a frightening situation that threatened his entire nation, one that was far beyond his ability to handle. Yet, his response revealed what dependence on God looks like. He declared in 2 Chronicles 20:12 (KJV):

“Neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”

His experience offers timeless lessons for our everyday struggles.

God is real, and trusting Him is more than a statement of faith. It is a daily choice to depend on His wisdom, obey His Word, and surrender what is beyond our control.

Let us explore ten practical ways to turn our confession of faith into a daily lifestyle of trusting and relying on God.

1. Make God Your First Response, Not Your Last Resort

Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

When challenges arise, our first response should be prayer rather than panic.

Put it into practice: Before reacting to a family disagreement, financial difficulty, or troubling news, take time to pray and seek God’s direction. Seeking wise counsel is important, but involve God from the beginning.

2. Admit When You Don’t Know What to Do

2 Chronicles 20:12 (KJV)

“Neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”

Jehoshaphat was a king with soldiers and advisers, yet he openly acknowledged his limitations.

Put it into practice: You do not have to figure everything out concerning your marriage, children, career, or future. Tell God honestly, “Lord, I do not know what to do. Please guide me.”

3. Pray Specifically About Your Concerns

Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Jehoshaphat presented Judah’s specific danger before God.

Put it into practice: Instead of praying only general prayers, bring your particular concerns before God. Mention that troubled relationship, difficult decision, financial obligation, or concern about your child. Nothing is too small to bring before Him.

4. Obey God’s Word Even When It Is Difficult

James 1:22 (KJV)

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

Trusting God is demonstrated through obedience, not merely religious declarations. His grace is sufficient!

Put it into practice: When God’s Word challenges your desires or plans, choose obedience even when it is difficult. Show love when it is easier to walk away, and stand for what is right even when it costs you. True faith means obeying God even when it is inconvenient.

5. Do Your Part and Leave the Outcome to God

Psalm 37:5 (KJV)

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Trusting God does not mean becoming passive. It means faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities while surrendering what we cannot control.

Put it into practice:

  • Marriage: Communicate lovingly, but leave your spouse’s response to God.
  • Children: Teach, guide, and pray, but recognize that you cannot control every decision they make.
  • Career: Prepare and apply diligently, but entrust the final decision to God.
  • Health: Seek appropriate medical care while praying and trusting God through the process.

Do what is right and leave the results in God’s hands.

6. Refuse to Let Fear Control Your Decisions

Psalm 56:3 (KJV)

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

Faith does not mean we never experience fear. It means choosing to trust God even when we are afraid.

Put it into practice: When in a strait, avoid making hasty decisions out of fear. Whisper a prayer first, and act with a calm heart.

7. Strengthen Your Faith Through God’s Word

Romans 10:17 (KJV)

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

We cannot confidently trust promises we do not know.

Put it into practice: Begin each day with Scripture. Meditate on God’s promises and remind yourself of them whenever anxiety arises.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

8. Praise God Before You See the Answer

2 Chronicles 20:22 (KJV)

“And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir…”

Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah praised God before witnessing their victory.

Put it into practice: Do not wait until every problem is resolved before thanking God. Sing, worship, and remember His goodness even while waiting for answers.

Praise is an expression of faith in God’s character, not a way of forcing a particular outcome.

9. Stop Carrying What You Have Surrendered to God

1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Sometimes we pray about a situation, only to return immediately to worrying about it.

Put it into practice: Whenever anxiety returns, remind yourself, “I have committed this matter to God. I will do what is necessary, but I will not allow worry to control my life.”

Surrender is sometimes a daily decision.

10. Remember God’s Faithfulness in the Past

Psalm 77:11 (KJV)

“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.”

Remembering what God has done strengthens our confidence in what He can do.

Put it into practice: Keep a record of answered prayers, unexpected provisions, and difficult seasons through which God sustained you. When new challenges arise, revisit those testimonies and encourage yourself in the Lord.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, teach me to trust You in every area of my life. When I do not know what to do, help me to keep my eyes upon You. Deliver me from fear, worry, and the desire to control everything. Give me grace to obey Your Word, patience to wait, and faith to rest in Your perfect wisdom. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
