When Life Presents a Threat, a Troubling Report, or an Impossible Situation
Key Scripture: Isaiah 37:14 (KJV), 2Kings 19:14
“And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.”
Have you ever received a report that suddenly filled your heart with fear? Perhaps a troubling medical report, a financial demand, a threatening letter, a difficult marriage, or a situation that seemed completely beyond your control.
Sometimes, the problem is not imaginary. It has a name, a description, and even documented evidence. What do you do when the facts before you appear frightening?
The life of King Hezekiah offers a remarkable lesson that has personally strengthened my faith and changed how I approach difficult situations.
Hezekiah Spread the Threat Before God
In Isaiah chapters 36 and 37, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, threatened Jerusalem. His representative, Rabshakeh, mocked the people’s confidence in God and tried to intimidate them into surrendering.
Later, Sennacherib sent a threatening letter to Hezekiah, boasting of his military victories and questioning God’s ability to deliver Jerusalem.
Hezekiah read the letter. He understood the danger. But rather than surrendering to fear, he did something extraordinary.
Isaiah 37:14–15 (KJV)
“And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,”
He spread it before the Lord!
He did not deny the threat or pretend it did not exist. He simply took the very document that described his problem into God’s presence. And God answered!
Isaiah 37:21 (KJV)
“Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:”
Those words are powerful: “Whereas thou hast prayed to me…”
God heard Hezekiah’s prayer and delivered Jerusalem from the Assyrian threat.
My Personal Experience: A Troubling Diagnosis
I remember a time when I received a diagnosis that was quite daunting. Looking at the findings, I became overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty.
Then I remembered this particular Scripture about Hezekiah.
I decided to do exactly what he did.
I took that troubling report before God and spread it out in prayer. I presented the findings to Him, trusting in His mercy and power.
To the glory of God, He intervened, and a miracle came out of that situation!
That experience left a lasting impression on me, and I have used it in different seasons of my life.
Another Testimony: From Infertility to Three Children
Some time ago, I knew a younger lady in church who was experiencing infertility. She and her husband had undergone medical investigations, but the exact cause of the problem had not been clearly identified.
Remembering Hezekiah’s experience, I encouraged her to gather all her medical reports and spread them before God in prayer.
She followed that counsel.
Today, to the glory of God, she has three children!
What a wonderful testimony of God’s faithfulness!
I share this experience to encourage faith and prayer, while recognizing that each person’s journey is different and that prayer can go hand in hand with appropriate medical care.
Spread Out Whatever Has a Name and Description
One beautiful thing about Hezekiah’s experience is that his problem was specific. It was written down, with clear threats and descriptions.
Likewise, many of life’s challenges have names and identifiable details.
A medical condition has a diagnosis. A debt has an amount. A legal problem has documents. A troubled marriage has areas of disagreement. A child’s difficulty may involve health, education, relationships, or behavior.
Whatever has a name and description can be brought before God in prayer.
I have personally applied this principle to situations involving my relationship with my husband, my children, friends, workplace, and other family members.
Sometimes there is no physical document to spread out. You can simply write it out and present the specific concerns before God, asking Him for wisdom, mercy, and intervention.
You can do the same in the house of God or in your sacred place of prayer.
The power is not in the paper or the physical act of spreading it out. Our confidence is in the living God who hears and answers prayer.
Philippians 4:6 (KJV)
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Notice those words: in every thing.
Nothing is too complicated, too personal, or too difficult to bring before our heavenly Father.
Try It and Have Your Own Experience With God
Dear reader, what is that situation confronting you today?
Is it a medical report, a financial challenge, a troubled relationship, an unanswered question, or a burden concerning your children?
Instead of allowing fear to consume your thoughts, take the matter and spread it before God.
Spread out the document if you have one. If there is no document, write out and describe the situation specifically in prayer.
Call upon God in the name of Jesus Christ. Ask for His mercy, wisdom, and intervention, while continuing to take the practical steps that may be necessary.
1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
I have done this personally and experienced God’s intervention. I have encouraged others to do the same and witnessed remarkable testimonies.
Try it! Bring that burden before God and develop your own personal experience of His faithfulness.
We cannot dictate how or when God will answer, but we can trust His wisdom, power, and love.
Remember, Hezekiah’s letter was threatening, but it did not have the final word.
Whatever you are facing today, spread it out before the Lord!
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Just as Hezekiah spread the threatening letter before You, I bring every troubling report, difficult situation, and burden in my life before You today.
Lord, You know every detail, even the things I cannot explain.
I present my health, marriage, children, family relationships, finances, and every unanswered concern before You.
Where there is sickness, grant healing and wisdom. Where there is confusion, bring direction. Where there is conflict, restore peace. Where there is fear, strengthen my faith.
Intervene according to Your perfect will, and let Your name be glorified.
Give me testimonies that will strengthen my faith and encourage others to trust You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
