One of the most difficult questions a believer may face is: Why does God sometimes delay healing? Why do some faithful Christians continue to suffer despite earnest prayer and unwavering faith? Why do some even die without receiving the healing for which we prayed and hoped?
The Bible clearly teaches that God is able to heal. Throughout Scripture, Jesus healed the sick, opened blind eyes, cleansed lepers, restored the lame, and even raised the dead. We also continue to witness testimonies of divine healing in our own day, reminding us that God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
However, while God still heals, Scripture also reveals that He does not always answer according to our preferred timing, methods, or expectations. Sometimes He heals instantly, sometimes gradually, and at other times He grants sustaining grace while accomplishing purposes that may not be immediately apparent to us. In every circumstance, we can trust that God is both loving and wise, and that He always does what is best for His children.
God’s ways are higher than our ways.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” — Isaiah 55:8–9
Sickness is not always a sign of sin or lack of faith. However, when sickness comes, it is wise to examine our lives before God and ensure that our ways are right with Him. We should prayerfully search our hearts, confess any known sin, and forsake every form of unrighteousness.
Job was described as a perfect and upright man, yet he endured tremendous suffering.
“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” — Job 13:15
Timothy had recurring health challenges:
“Use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” — 1 Timothy 5:23
Paul also wrote:
“Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.” — 2 Timothy 4:20
These passages remind us that faithful believers may experience sickness even as they walk closely with God.
God sometimes uses affliction to draw us nearer to Him.
“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.” — Psalm 119:67
“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” — Psalm 119:71
Trials often produce spiritual growth, humility, patience, and a deeper dependence upon God.
Even Paul experienced an unanswered request for healing.
Three times, Paul pleaded with the Lord to remove his thorn in the flesh.
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
God did not remove the thorn, but He gave Paul sufficient grace to endure it.
God sees every tear and hears every prayer.
“I have surely seen the affliction of my people… and have heard their cry.” — Exodus 3:7
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” — Psalm 56:8
“The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.” — Psalm 34:15
No prayer offered in faith is ignored by God.
We are encouraged to continue praying.
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” — Matthew 7:7
“Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” — Luke 18:1
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” — James 5:16
Delay is not a reason to stop praying.
God’s promise extends beyond this present life.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” — Revelation 21:4
Take heart today. If you are waiting for healing, do not lose confidence in God. The Lord who healed yesterday still heals today. The Lord who delays is not neglecting you. The Lord who allows the trial is also the Lord who supplies the grace to endure it.
If you have not yet given your heart to Jesus Christ, today is the day to repent, forsake your sins, and place your faith in Him. Invite Him into your heart and begin a new walk with Him. In Christ, there is the assurance of eternal life and the blessed hope that whether healing comes now, later, or not until the resurrection, God’s promises will never fail.
“Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” — Psalm 27:14
Prayer: Heavenly Father, strengthen every weary soul waiting for healing. Help us trust Your wisdom when we do not understand Your timing. Grant healing according to Your will, grace for every trial, and faith to continue believing Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
